Chapter 23

Hall

The plan was set in motion. Operation Big-Ass Party was underway. Hall was indifferent about the name, Fitz thought it was stupid, and Jackson was the one who had come up with it. Hall had been tasked with talking to Sergeant Richards about getting liquor, but first, he needed to try and talk Kodiak into fighting. They still needed to find a way to procure a conference room for the party, but Jackson and Red said they could find one and he trusted they would.

The mortars were bunked on the starboard side of the Boxer, so Hall had to take the long way around to get to Kodiak’s squad on the port side, but he didn’t mind the walk. He took the time to figure out exactly how he was going to talk Kodiak into fighting. Kodiak had done well in combatives in basic training and was built like one of the blue aliens they were going to war with, but Hall didn’t know if he’d ever fought before. A twinge of guilt bit at him when he realized he probably should’ve known that if he considered Kodiak a close friend, which he did.

As the doors opened up to First Squad’s sleeping corridor, he saw the piercing eyes of Angeline Moreau staring back at him. “Oh, hey, Moreau,” he stammered.

“Hello to you as well, Hall,” she replied in her thick French-accented English. “What brings you to these parts?”

“I’m actually looking for Bear—have you seen him?” Hall asked.

“He’s in his quarters, two down on the left.” She pointed.

“Thanks, I appreciate it. Good seeing you, Moreau.”

“Good seeing you too—might even see you at your little party,” she teased.

His heart sank. “How’d you hear about that?” he asked nervously. The last thing he needed was for their plans to be found out.

“Calm down. A couple of the people in our squad were talking about it. Even the NCOs are excited for it.”

“Well, please don’t go getting this thing shut down before it even kicks off,” he pleaded.

“No one important will find out, Hall. Relax.” The doors behind him opened and she walked past. “And don’t be a stranger, OK?”

“Mortars are only a hop-skip away, Moreau,” he said as the doors closed.

He turned and made his way to the room Moreau had pointed out and walked in. He had never been in the grunts’ sleeping quarters, but they weren’t any different than the mortars’. Same layout, same paint, same lights, same everything. He stood in the door and looked around for a moment until he spotted Kodiak sitting in his bunk.

He made his way over and slapped him on the back. “Hello, Private Kodiak, nice to see you again.” He tried to put on his best Muleskin impression.

“That’s Private First Class Kodiak to you.” He smiled, showing his new rank.

Hall smiled. “Damn, that’s awesome, bro! Congrats. How’d you manage to pull that off?”

“Sergeant Muleskin put me in for it today—said I had leadership potential.”

“Hell, Bear, we all knew you had leadership potential in basic.
